We had to put down my wife’s 16 year old cat today. She had been losing weight substantially for the last two months. She was a tiny 8.5lbs to start with and two weeks ago she was down to 6.3lbs. Yesterday we noticed she had stopped eating solid food completely. We tried giving her tuna and she barely touched it. Then she went missing, we found her 40 minutes later hiding in the back of my wife’s closet, it’s was pretty obvious she had picked her place to die in peace. When we found her she was breathing shallow and fast, and didn’t want to move at all. The vet said she most likely had lung cancer and there was nothing we could do.

Poor girl

I do feel your pain, I’ve had to bid farewell to two cats

If there is any justice in this misbegotten universe, she’s gone to a place with lots of milk, shady spots in the tall grass, and slow mice

Oh, HFV... I’m so, so sorry. Saying goodbye to a pet is never easy. But I’m sure you and your wife gave her lots of love and a very happy home. My condolences.

Sucks.

Same thing happened to Mrs McMike’s cat a few years ago. After a few weeks of watching the cat lose weight/appetite, we had to call the vet out to the house and put him down.

As he got worse and worse, it gave me the opportunity to dig the hole ahead of time. I would sneak out to the back of our property whenever she wasn’t home and dig a little every day. By the time the decision was made on that Thursday afternoon, I only had to go out back or a little bit to finish it before the vet came out on Friday.

It was horrible watching her pet the cat until he took his final breath, (also terrible to watch, he was a good cat) but within five minutes he was in his final resting place. There was nothing else do to - closure was quick.

To this day, she still thinks it only takes 15 minutes to dig a 3' x 2' x 1.5' hole.

Lost a cat suddenly like this. We came home one day to find him in the middle of the floor, unwilling to move, taking shallow labored breaths. We took him to the vet the next day and found his chest cavity was full of fluid (the vet thought a tumor in his throat must have ruptured, which would have made sense since he lost is meow years beforehand), and there was no guarantee of being able to save him. I couldn’t go to the putting down, couldn’t even bear to look in the box they brought home to see him one last time. They buried him in the back yard and that was that.

Looking back I should have been there for him as that cat was always there for me when I was growing up. He had a sense of knowing when you were sad and would cuddle up with you.

She lived a long life because of you, and you granted her an easy death without prolonging the suffering. Its obvious you did right by your furry companion.

Hugs to you and your wife.

We had to put down one of our cats two weeks ago. Circle of life conversation for the kids and the whole nine yards.

Sorry to hear this. It’s never easy saying goodbye to a pet.

I always take solace in that I’ve given the pet the best life that I could, and she had 16 great years.
